@josny1, there was a portion near the beginning of the ceremony where the 29 "footsteps" fireworks that led from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest were digitized on TV (all except the last two footsteps that appeared above the stadium itself). The footprints fireworks actually did happen, but because it's too dangerous for a helicopter to fly overhead to capture the footage, broadcasters showed us a digitized version of what was actually happening at the time. Nothing was faked.

@akmbh16, no country is going to use the Opening Ceremony to showcase its rotten side. By your argument, Vancouver should've dedicated its Opening Ceremony to the homeless, Torino to its crime syndicates, Athens to the massive debt accumulated from hosting the games, and Salt Lake to the near extinction of Native American cultures.

@dyoys500, you know the original plan Beijing had for lighting the cauldron? Using a giant phoenix to fly up and do it (not an actual phoenix obviously lol). However, due to the IOC's safety concerns, that plan was scrapped and instead we saw "Plan B."

@josny1 Of course the fireworks were fake, they were made in China haha.

When I watch the Olympics, as soon as I see the flame from the torch, I shout to the heavens "The Torch is Lit. Let The Games Begin!!!"

lol when you dont recognize that humans have rights you need to spend a billion dollars on the opening ceremonies :p

@houw2 LOL and out of the 4 poles 1 of them didnt come out so only 3 of the 4 final guys light the fire 1 person just stood there doing nothing with a torch on hand... man that was just pure sadness

josny1  (14/02/2010)
@TheNYFlame That Cauldron got stuck too..smae guy as Vancouver I think, Atkins? They should just run up stairs and light a cauldron...back to basics And do like Athens did in 2004 use Olive wreath crowns again. And all open air events, no roofs like the old days. Looked nicer I thought.

@ngnav Every Country should be different and should not try to compatre..sometimes less is more and many are forgetting about the actual meaning of the Olympics..it is all not lights and special man made effects ect.

josny1  (14/02/2010)
@kipfulness Athens was nicer I think and more touching to the meaning of Olympics

josny1  (14/02/2010)
@houw2 Torino Winter was awsome....Athens & Barcelona were the best Summer Games and Athens opening..more authentic to what the Olympics are about...Plus I read Bejing fireworks waere all not real?

The 2008 Beijing Olympics was the best opening ceremony ever. It totally blew the world. Except for the lighting of the couldron, everything was spectacular- the fireworks, the presentation. Well of course, the lighting of the couldron still goes to 1992 Barcelona Olympics. That was totally awesome!!!

I like how they fucked up the Vancouver torch lighting, then made Wayne Gretsky stand on top of a truck for 15 minutes in the rain as a mob chased them to the waterfront. Classy stuff.

malika810  (13/02/2010)
@kipfulness oh i agree, it was mind blowing, i dont think any other country can top that, it was for sure one of a kind!

degoodz  (13/02/2010)
I liked the CGI fire works and the cute little girl who lip sank well the so called less attractive girl sang in the back room. Classy stuff:P

The tickets for Chinese nationals were 800 yuan each. They were a bit more expensive for foreigner but were very difficult to get. You go through rounds of drawing for them. At the very end, close to August, you could not get them unless through a travel deal, which included the ticket to the opening ceremony but prices ranged between 30000-100,000.

bluetulip18  (13/02/2010)
Now that is a torch lighting: 100%, not 75%.

Personally, i think that the Bejing Opening Ceremony was one of the moswt beautiful and innovative ever, or at least that i have seen. it was nothing short of mindblowing.
